Default House Rules - Things That Don't Fit Elsewhere

We run our game using the Laws of the Night: Revised, Laws of the Night: Camarilla Guide (or Laws of the: Wild/Dreaming/Ascension/Hunt/Sabbat Guide if you're playing anything other than camarilla or anarch), Liber de Ghouls & Laws of Elysium rulebooks published by White-Wolf Games. There are very few changes we believe we'll be adding to the core rule set but when we do add something new, the changes will be posted on the appropriate pages of our site.

Since Laws of the Night (revised) and all the above mentioned books are no longer published, you may not have much luck finding a copy at your favorite game store (which we hope is Madhatterr Games) but, you can get a copy of Laws of the Night (revised) from RPG Now: (in the form of a PDF) or from Amazon.com in either hard or soft cover. Obviously, it's cheaper to purchase the pdf but a hard copy of the book be handy to own, in our honest opinion.

A RULE ON THE RULES - As a way to keep the game events from having to be rewritten or edited after they occur or the game from being held up while we search for a computer to verify a disputed rule... all rules calls made by storytelling staff on site, supersede the rules presented here. If, at any time a rules call is made which contradicts what is presented on our website and results in a character death or in some significantly large set-back for a character (status loss, blood hunt, loss of a character's primary resources, torpor)... an award of 25 player points will be granted to the player for use in the next character they create at the staff's discretion. We admit that no person is perfect but, sometimes a rule call has to be made for the game to keep moving along.

+Inigo Montoya Rule - Players should take GREAT pains to avoid plot that their former PCs were involved in. To this end, a player's new character should be of a different Clan from his or her last character. One character you have should not benefit directly or indirectly from any current or former character that they may be playing. This includes hearing something from another character in the game who learned it from another or former character you played. And you should NEVER, EVER attempt to avenge a past character with a new character you are playing. "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father... prepare to die!" -The Princess Bride.

+Absentee Policy - If you miss three consecutive games without giving the STs any notice of your intentions your character becomes an NPC and is considered the property of the STs. If you're ONLY an online subscriber and you don't have a character made within three months of your joining the site you will be removed from the website to conserve on storage space; additionally if you aren't actually role-playing for two months time after making a character, your character will enter NPC status and be considered property of the STs in order to resolve any storylines you've left unfinished. In most cases a character which becomes property of the STs will just enter a state of inactivity (torpor) to be explained by the storytellers in whatever way will best fit the game until such time as the player returns. However, if a character who has become an NPC can be used to enhance the game, it will be - even if that means the death of the PC so please... keep in touch here on the site and let us know if you'll be taking any leave of absences.

+Adjudication - During any challenge or scene, any player may request that a Storyteller or narrator oversee or adjudicate. Additionally, to keep a scene moving along, a storyteller may "story out" or describe the results of a scene rather than forcing it to go through a lengthy amount of challenges.

+Item Cards - If an item of any kind is used for any reason in a challenge, ANY player may ask to see the item card representing the item. If the player using the item cannot produce an item card initialed by an ST, the item does not exist, and cannot be used. This should be reported to a narrator or ST immediately.

+Acquisition Rule - In the case of abilities and influences which the book states that a character is able to "acquire" or "access" certain types of items (guns, magical items etc), those items are only available for acquisition when/if the storyteller decides that they are. In short, there won't always be magical items that your contacts can find for you and while there are a lot of guns on the street, you and your contacts won't always be able to get them... even if they are being sold in the local walmart, mail order catalogs or online.

+James Bond Rule - Vampire is a game about gothic personal horror (in short the conflicts a person faces internally when put into extraordinary external circumstances) it is NOT meant to be a world full of high tech gadgetry such as those used in movies like James Bond. Thusly, many items that players might consider "easy to get on ebay or in a mail order catalog" will not be "easy" to get and in some cases will not be available at all. "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" -The Joker, Batman

+Firebug and Bomber Rule - It should go without saying that explosions and massive fires change the very face of a city. In real life, when something like this happens, major media networks (CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News etc) all pay attention when arson happens ANYWHERE but most especially when it occurs in places like churches or government buildings.

While it may be tempting to "spice up the night" or "get revenge on someone" by trying to blow up or burn down something their character is associated with (or is inside of) these things NEVER make the game enjoyable for anyone. However, these things do take place in the world of darkness and so we are including the information below concerning those type of events.

1. Unless your character has any demolitions ability (see the rules changes section of our website) your character and anyone who is with your character will be killed at ground zero of the blast with no chance of survival regardless of precautions or powers you possess. Additionally, storytellers will decide if you were successful in killing anything other than yourself and doing collateral damage at random. So there is no promise of anyone dying other than yourself if you don't have demolitions as an ability.

2. When something blows up or burns down the following things will occur without exception. A full investigation by the fire department, FBI and perhaps Homeland Security will occur. If anyone was killed in the incident the media will not let up on this story for at least one month and for as long as it takes for someone/something (within reason) to be implicated in the incident.

With regard to Kindred, if the Prince is still an NPC he/she will take all measures to find the parties responsible with EXTREME prejudice. Powers of all the characters who owe anything to the prince will be called in to find the parties responsible. Should the Prince not find the parties responsible within three months time then an Archon will arrive to investigate. Where the Prince is concerned with finding the truth and punishing the party responsible... the archon may not care so much who he pins it on. Thusly, everyone in the game should be worried that they could and MAY lose their character for the foolish actions of others. We hope that this will encourage players to discourage one another from this sort of action. Should the Prince be a PC... he/she has three months to catch the people responsible or pin it on someone successfully before an archon comes knocking... and if he has to clean up the mess, the Prince *MAY* find himself replaced for the Archon's trouble.

3. If the building in question is even remotely linked to the church expect that they will send investigators and depending on recent events... they may send a hunter who will also not stop until he find someone to blame (read: kill) for the crime. If the hunter is killed before he can return home victorious, the chruch will send better equipped and knowledgeable hunters and they will not be satisfied with just one corpse, assuming that there must be more than one to have taken down the last guy.

+Diablerie - If and when you do this dasterdly deed... be sure to make note of this in your character sheet's exp log by adding a "0" exp entry and the explaination should state "Commited Diablerie on (name of character) played by (player name or NPC) went from gen (old gen) to (new gen) and went from (old humanity) to (one less humanity). If you should reach 0 humanity by diablerie you need to IMMEDIATELY inform a storyteller and NOT take any further actions. {ADDED THIS CLARIFICATION ON 3/12/10}
