A New Promise

Rain pattered against the window pain as A.J. listened to Keela sobbing behind him. It was their first real fight in a very long time. Keela sobbed as she said, “Why can’t you let it go? Why do you have to do this?” He closed his eyes, knowing the pain that his mission was causing her. She continued, “All I want is for us to stop moving around, to make a home here in Lamar. I like it here!”
He turned around to look at her and said, “I made a vow that I would avenge him! Why can’t you understand that my word is my bond? It always has been. I have to do this.” It was killing him inside to see the tears streaming down her face. He hated seeing her cry and he knew that he was the cause of her pain. He understood her position and he had promised her long ago they would settle down when it was all over, but that was 10 years ago.
She sobbed a little more as she wiped the tears away and said, “A.J. the man you made the vow to, has been dead for almost a century. How long can you hold on to your anger and guilt over his death? It wasn’t your fault and you aren’t accountable to anyone, any longer for that vow!”
Her statement was not entirely accurate though. There was another that he had vowed vengeance for. There was one other person out there working towards avenging him. There was his sire. She was still out there working just as diligently as he was to avenge him. He looks at her and says, “There’s someone else that I swore to, that I would avenge him…… my sire. She’s out there too, working towards the same goal.”
“Then why haven’t you contacted her?! Why haven’t you told her, where you are and where we’ve tracked that Pack to?!” She roared back at him. She was angry, but at the same time still hurt. “She could help us end this right away, along with the rest of your clan. Why is it you won’t bring her in?” she resumed sobbing as she finished speaking. She sobbed the next words out, barely audible, “Because you’re too damn stubborn to ask for help.”
A.J. crosses the room and takes her into his arms. He hated that his mission was the cause of all of her pain. It was the cause of her unhappiness. It was then that he began to realize that, taking down a pack of Sabbat on his own was not something that he was capable of. One on one he could take them down, but, he knew he would never catch any of them one on one.
She buried her face into his upper chest and said, “Is it more important than us? Is it ever going to be just the two us? Alone? Is there no one here that you can trust to help you to complete this mission, so we can settle down and stay in one place for once? Or is it all an excuse to keep you from having to find something else to keep you going? Am I not enough?” The questions pierced his heart one by one. As she asked him these questions, it all began to sink in, that she knew him better than he knew himself anymore.
He takes her cheeks in both of his hands and says to her softly, “I will find the help I need to finish this mission. It’s time I found peace with this and it’s time we settle down.” He kisses her forehead softly and whispers, “I love you, Keela and I’m going to finish it for you. I promise.”
